Education and Employment

Georgian College

Southeast, about 0.5 Hours close by is the City of Owen Sound, home to the region’s Georgian College (Owen Sound Campus), with its signature programs of Marine Engineering and Navigation, Health and Wellness, Power Engineering, Police Foundations, and Early Childhood Education.  The college offers many courses for evening continuing education, and Ontario Learn on-line courses.

Secondary and Elementary Schools

Town of South Bruce Peninsula is home to the recently constructed Peninsula Shores District School in Wiarton.  This Kindergarten to Grade 12 state of-the-art facility draws from the elementary schools in Hepworth, Sauble Beach, Cape Croker, and Wiarton.  The Fraser Institute recently released its 2014 annual report, ranking Peninsula Shores District School the top-ranked school in the Bruce-Grey region of Ontario.  The school is part of the region’s Bluewater District School Board.  Wiarton is home to the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre, which has been operating for 40 years.  Please see the Centre’s website for more information on outdoor education.  Please visit the board’s website for a complete listing of Public Elementary and Secondary schools in the area.  There is also the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board, with its closest schools in Owen Sound.  French Immersion is offered in the area by both school boards, while a French Language school, St. Dominique Savio, with grades JK to grade 8, exists in Owen Sound.  Children are bussed to Owen Sound schools.  Montessori and private elementary education are all offered in Owen Sound.

Employment

One of the area’s main employers is Bruce Power, south of Port Elgin, in the nearby

Municipality of Kincardine.

More locally, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula is close to employers such as Caframo manufacturers, Gateway Haven Long Term Care, Grey Bruce Health Services Wiarton and Owen Sound Sites, federal, provincial, and municipal governments, Georgian College, Bluewater District School Board, Bruce Grey District Catholic School Board, and many private resource, tourism and recreation, transportation, automotive, agricultural, and business enterprises.   

Our regional governments, or upper tier municipalities,  include the County of Bruce, our

neighbouring Grey County, and our lower tier municipality, the Town of  South Bruce

Peninsula.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is proximal to larger cities to the south, where culture, sporting events, concerts, universities, Provincial Regional Health Centres, and international travel links, exist.  Downtown Toronto - 3 Hours - Numerous Universities and Entertainment Pearson International Airport - 2.5 Hours Guelph - 2 Hours - Featuring the University of Guelph Kitchener/Waterloo - 2 Hours - Close by to Laurier University, University of Waterloo, and Conestoga College London - 2.5 Hours - Home to the University of Western Ontario Barrie - 2.25 Hours to the east
